Newsletter Updates Osceola Public Schools is examining the idea of moving the monthly newsletter to a digital edition, but we are looking for a little feedback from patrons that read the newsletter. We would like to share our reasoning why and ask for feedback from those that prefer the printed edition. 1. A digital edition would save the school district thousands of dollars to go toward student programs. 2. The digital edition would be available on our website or, if requested, via an email sent to patrons that wish to read it that way. We can also archive old editions. 3. A digital edition would be formatted for easy reading on a computer, tablet, or cell phone. 4. A digital edition would be available before a paper version would be. 5. Any errors can be corrected immediately, leading to more timely and accurate information. 6. A digital newsletter would allow us to reach a wider array of audience with it being on the website along with available QR codes on campus and around town so we can be out in front of people easier. For those that prefer a paper copy, we would be happy to continue that service for the time being, please sign up to continue having a paper copy mailed to you in the survey below. If you prefer the digital option for the reasons above, feel free to also fill out the survey below. https://forms.gle/QzSfFycd87gKkrHg8 or use QR code for survey

Last week, some sophomore students were able to attend the Sueños Summit at Central Community College in Columbus! The Sueños Summit gives high school students an opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers who have overcome adversity to accomplish great things in their lives. The students were able to learn about scholarship availability and other opportunities for continued education with a panel of speakers from more than five Nebraskan colleges. Our day began with hearing from David Edward Garcia, who grew up speaking both Spanish & English. He told us that he was not a great student academically. Though grades ARE important, they do not define you. No matter your background, it does not define you. David, who was once considered an “at-risk student,” is now a motivational speaker who can speak 5 languages and has obtained multiple master’s degrees! Everything is possible if you work for it and believe in yourself. Our first break-out session saw us with EducationQuest, a program that helps students to uncover a universe of opportunities and financing options that can and will propel students into their educational dreams! Students heard from Latino speakers about the scholarship opportunities available to them. No matter what, there are scholarships out there for everyone if they wish to go to college! We next got to visit with employers & colleges during the Builders’ Marketplace. Students were able to explore various colleges and universities, discover job resources, and unlock more secrets to scholarships. Students got to walk away with plenty of college swag! The final break-out session allowed us to hear from dedicated professionals who play essential roles in supporting and uplifting individuals in their communities. They shared obstacles that they faced in getting to where they are today and how they overcame them. This session aimed to inspire students to recognize the importance of mental and emotional health, community support, and the shared responsibility of building a brighter future for all! We highly enjoyed this experience and look forward to going back next year, but with more students! What a special opportunity to uplift young minds.

With David Edward Garcia
Yesterday, the HS JAG Officers (Eastyn, Graci, & Jackson), were able to attend the JAG Leadership Development Conference in Omaha at Creighton University. Along with other JAG students, we were able to hear from our JAG National Officer Parliamentarian and his experience in the program, as well his experience competing for an officer position on the National Career Association. Our first break-out session allowed us to meet and engage with other JAG students by creating a tower for a ping pong ball to travel through. The tower had to be free-standing, and the goal was to be the team who’s ping pong ball traveled the longest. All three JAG Officers were at different tables and helped to create some neat towers! Next on the agenda was lunch! We enjoyed tacos and churros while listening to fellow JAG members running for officer positions present their speeches to us. Each candidate shared their promise and commitment to JAG, and what strengths they can bring to the table if elected to a position. We were able to vote for who we thought would be best fit for the positions of state President, Vice President, & Secretary. Our final break-out room challenged us to think deeper about friendship and leadership, and how interconnected those terms are. We are always leading, whether we realize it or not. Students were able to write a poem about leadership and friendship. Our prompt was, “My friend is a leader when they…” Students wrote about what qualities they see in a leader and in a friend. What a unique way to look at friendship! We enjoyed getting some JAG swag and meeting new people. What a cool opportunity for our youth to be a part of!
