6 Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors had the opportunity to visit the IBEW Local 22 Electrical Union in Omaha last Thursday. This was an invaluable experience for these students interested in the electrical industry. Students got an overview of what it means to participate and learn through an apprenticeship program, understanding the benefits of FREE schooling and health insurance, having night classes so they can work part- or full-time during the day, and even being paid to learn! There is an incredibly high demand for young adults in the workforce. It was neat for students to have this experience to gain a better understanding of exactly what an apprenticeship program looks like. During this field trip, students were able to understand the different types of electrical apprenticeship training – Inside (Commercial & Industrial), Telecommunications, and Residential. Students were then given a tour of the facility, as well as view the labs and classroom where students learn through hands-on, group work. We next got to see and participate in a Virtual Reality Simulation, allowing the participants to do virtual electrical work themselves, and the other students could watch what that participant sees and does in their virtual reality headset. To end our trip, we explored with static electricity. We were able to gain more understanding of electricity through a hands-on demonstration, which required one person to place a hand on a basic Van de Graaff generator. The other students joined together by touching only their fingers together before touching hands with the student that has their hand placed on the Van de Graaff generator. This sent a shock of electricity through each of us, with the shock being stronger for those closer to the student touching the generator. We also noticed that students’ hair became extremely staticky when they touched the generator. As soon as they removed their hand and stepped down to the floor, their hair immediately went down. We really enjoyed this in-depth demonstration and time to learn more about this career field. We look forward to experiencing similar types of field trips, but closer to home! Please contact Ms. Mumm at mmumm@oscoela.esu7.org if you have any suggestions for employers, companies, and more that would be willing to work with us on setting up a field trip in the near-future!
